If you want to play on the "fairest" golf course on the rota of courses used by the R&A for the Open Championship, then Muirfield is the right place for you.
Other British links may have the edge when it comes to stunning settings, but there are few better examples anywhere of a course where you must think so smartly in order to score well. Everything is right in front of you, there are no trick shots or unreasonable demands, and no two holes are the same. The course changes direction constantly, so you'll need imagination, a shrewd golfing brain and a comprehensive shot repertoire.
One of the unusual charms about the Scottish version is that it is laid out in two separate loops, the front nine running clockwise on the outer and the back nine going in the opposite direction on the inner.
History:
Golf was first played at Muirfield in 1891 on 18 holes laid out by Old Tom Morris. Restricted by stone walls that completely surrounded the course, the original layout occupied 117 acres.
In 1923, a further 50 acres were secured to the north of the course. Renowned course designer Harry Colt was consulted and his recommendations effectively produced the layout as it is today.
Quotes:
"I have played on many courses throughout the UK and not one comes close to Muirfield in offering the complete golfing experience - history, classic links, no two holes similar, friendly members and staff not forgetting the tremendous lunch." Mike Robson

"I'm so glad I signed up with Scotland for Golf while visiting St. Andrews. David, my instructor, was professional, attentive, and an excellent communicator. The facilities at their establishment were top notch. Since coming back home I can already see improvements in my golf game. Highly recommended for locals and tourists alike."
